12 nursing home deaths in Hollywood ruled as homicides

Authorities ruled 12 of the 14 deaths at a Florida nursing home after Hurricane Irma as homicides. The Broward County medical examiner’s office released the autopsy results on Nov. 22, 2017. Residents at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were evacuated Sept. 13, 2017, when eight elderly residents died in quick succession after the facility lost power to its central air conditioning and overheated. Another six died in subsequent weeks.
No arrests have been made. A police spokeswoman said the investigation would continue and part of that would be determining who should be charged. The nursing home is no longer in operation, and state regulators revoked its license. All 254 employees were laid off in late September 2017.
