Margaretha Sauer suffered from dehydration and malnutrition while in residence at Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was allowed to lie in her own feces for hours. Testimony at trial also showed that the facility was seriously understaffed and residents suffered as a result. Because of the nursing home’s negligence Ms. Sauer eventually went into kidney failure and ultimately died. The jury returned the largest verdict ever reached against an Arkansas nursing home at that time.
